The only decent people I ever saw at the racecourse were horses.
The National Yearling sales series commence at Karaka on Monday and runs until the 5th of February.
I have now inspected a great majority of the yearlings, as have each of our trainers. Over the next two days we will cross-reference our shortlists and draw up a list of horses that make our ‘A’ list.
These horses will then be vetted and have their x-rays screened by our vets. This will give us a final list to bid on.
We look for horses that will stand up to the rigours of racing and training, are athletic and have a pedigree. This will give us the most chance of success on the race track, which is ultimately what we all want.
Another important factor for us is to buy them for what we think is fair value. This will give us the opportunity to trade them at a profit as racehorses if we want to, or allows them to retain high residual value as broodmares at the end of their careers.
I will be buying yearlings for Stephen Marsh in Cambridge; Andrew Scott at Matamata; Lisa Latta at Awapuni and Riccarton; Chris Waller in Sydney and Bruce Marsh in Singapore.
If you would like to have a share in one of the yearlings we buy this year e-mail me at albert@goracing.co.nz or call me on 027 2037774 and I will contact you as we make our purchases throughout the sale.
Kind regards
Albert
Cruiseonby got our year off aon a good note on the 2nd of January with a strong fresh up win at Tauherenikau over 1000 metres.
She is a horse that has always just lacked a little maturity, but has physically strengthened in her last break and come back in looking better than she ever has. After sitting 5th behind the pace, Vanessa Johnston bought her to the outside in the straight and she let down strongly sweeping to a win by an ever increasing margin of 1 1/4 lengths.
She is a half sister to the very talented Walkonby and is capable of building on this success throughout this campaign.
We will have a number of runners over the next two weeks both in New Zealand and Australia and it is always a fun time to have a horse at the races.
Over the Christmas period last year we had four winners in six days, including winning the Startford Cup with Chettak. Those winners paid $1.70; $9.90; $15.10 and $17.10, so there were plent of happy people!
One of those winners was Savour the Moment, on debut. Just 12 months later her will race in the Group 2 Rich Hill Mile at Ellerslie on the 1st of January. It is a big step up for him, but he is a very good horse on the way up and strikes the field at the right weight as he is likely to carry 52 kilograms in the race. Lisa Allppress will ride him.
Of our winners from this peroiod last year, Chettak will be defending his Stratford Cup title on the 31st of December and Start Packing will look to get back in the winners circle at Taupo on the 30th.
All of our runners will be listed under our runners tab, with the next two to race being Sadlers Rock at Awapuni on Boxing Day who holds a Derby nomination and Mt Difficulty at Timaru on the 28th in a rating 75 1200 metres.
Have a great Christmas and relaxing New Year and I hope you are able to take plenty of money off the bookies.

Go Racing has syndicated it’s first horse to race in Singapore.
The horse, which will be trained by master trainer Bruce Marsh, was extremely popular and syndicated in just three days.
"We want to be able to offer owners the opportunity to race horses not only in New Zealand, but also internationally” said Director Albert Bosma. “We have Chris Waller, Sydney’s champion trainer preparing horses for our owners, as well as Greg Bennet in Scone and this new relationship we have with Bruce, gives our owners wonderful opportunities to race in the best races and for great prize money. With each horse we manage, we can look at New Zealand, Singapore and Australia to see which is the best career path for them. We believe we are unique in offering all of these options”.
Singapore racing offers great rewards, with maiden horses able to race for S$65,000 and the cost structure is around the same as racing a horse in New Zealand.
Bruce Marsh has been training is Singapore since 2005 and since that time has won two Singapore Derbies with HELLO AND GOODBYE and RACE AHEAD and also traines the Triple Crown Winner of 2011 GINGERBREADMAN.
Go Racing will be syndicating further horses for Singapore in 2012.
Two of our favourite horses and true veterans, Chettak and Pycock Flyer are showing that there is fun and life in them yet as race horses.
Chettak, now a 9yo and probably in his last preparation needed his first two runs back this campaign before finding form over 2000 metres and going under by a bob of the head in an Open Handicap at Waipa last Sunday. He is a marvel that has won 8 races in 56 starts and $360,000 in New Zealand, not counting his Australian campaigns.
He isn’t so keen on wet tracks anymore and likes firm footing, so can add to those 8 wins over summer if he continues race as he did last Sunday. His next start will be The Listed Wanganui Cup over 2040 metres this Saturday, but we will be keeping a close eye on the weather.
Pycok Flyer, one year the junior to Chettak has won 5 races from 54 starts and also needed two starts this time in before finding form with a good 2nd at Masterton on Saturday after working hard from a wide draw. He too can add to his record over the coming months and has the added advantage of being able to perform on any footing, so a wet summer track holds no fear for him.
Both horses are very sound for their age and love racing and this is a key to their longevity. They also like nothing better after a race than to go home and put their feet up with slippers on and smoke a wee pipe in their rocking chairs, like the granfathers they are.
Both will have homes at their stables when they eventually retire and will be loved and well looked after.
